You can tow more than your payload, but they are NOT THE SAME THING. Your tow weight should be less than your 1) payload in trailer and 2) trailer weight itself. Your truck bed payload is not towing weight.
Most SUV have a payload of 800-1700lbs. This should include passengers & all items in car/suv. SUVs or other vehicles will also have a towing weight if an attached ball-hitch for trailer is present.
150/1500 - 1/2 ton
250/2500 - 3/4 ton
350/3500 - 1 ton
It is true that the truck above can handle more. But this is your reasonability to be safe and check your truck.
A pallet of tile normally contains 32 boxes covering about 500sqft and weights about 2000lbs.
So let’s break this down for you. Every 1 sqft is about 4lbs.
If you need to lay 200sqft then it is about 800lbs. This would need to include the 10-20% extra you need to buy also.
NOTES
- You can’t really load more than 1 pallet in a truck. If we load the pallet, you load the loose boxes.
- A car starts to show signs of being overweight at around 10+ boxes.
- Pay attention to the trailer information also. Some trailer are impossible to load with a forklift.
LOADING YOUR TILE WITH FORKLIFT
We are going to push, pull, scoot, drag, and bump your trailer or truck if loading by forklift. If you consider your truck your Rolls-Royce, then bring another truck or prepare to load the tile by hand. All efforts are made to load your tile as careful as possible.
This long gooseneck trailer arrived to pick-up 2500sqft of tile weighing a little over 10,000lbs. The truck pulling the trailer was a 1-ton 350/3500 dually type. We aren't truck experts so excuse the lack of terminology. The trailer probably had a payload of 15,000lbs. And just because the trailer could have handled 12 pallets in deck space, the weight would have been 25,000lbs and probably exceeded the payload or pulling capacity of the truck. So just because you have a big trunk in your car doesn't mean you can haul 30 boxes of tile.
